Lineside Civils

Our Rail Project Teams at Enable Infrastructure are experts in the field of lineside track ancillary civil engineering. We have decades of experience in the delivery of lineside civil engineering works on the UK’s rail infrastructure, and we are one of Network Rail’s go to suppliers for works of this nature. Here are some examples of the major programmes we have supported over the past few decades.

Train Lengthening – We have supported the Southern Region capacity enhancement programme which was delivered in the late 00’s and was followed by the Thameslink Programme which took us to 2018. The Enable team delivered countless station and platform alterations such as platform lengthening, new station platforms, alteration of signals and signal structures. Platform extensions sometimes involved the widening or rail over road bridges to make space for the fanning out of the railway lines associated with a longer platform and the company has many examples of projects delivered.

Signalling Projects – Signalling Projects require a lot of lineside civil engineering such as cable containment routes, equipment bases for equipment cabinets and signals themselves. Signals can be located on a single post or on multi-track gantries and there is no challenge our team has not faced and successfully overcome. Enable were a framework delivery partner to Network Rail for the Signalling related civils on Thameslink Programme, we have since gone on to deliver Signalling Immunisation works for Great Western Electrification, and more recently Enable have delivered the Feltham Area Re-Signalling Programme Phases 1,2 and 5.

Track Drainage – The Enable Team are experts in the delivery of track drainage schemes. This includes the design and delivery of new drainage networks to alleviate flood hit areas, as well as the refurbishment of existing networks which can become blocked and damaged. Enable are currently delivering a Control Period 6 (2019-2024) track drainage framework for Network Rail in the counties of Kent and Sussex. Services offered include CCTV, Jetting, Design and Installation of new drainage networks.

Train Performance – Anti-Trespass/Fencing/De-Vegetation – Our teams are highly experienced in delivering all manner of reliability improvement works along the lineside. We frequently deliver anti-trespass works at level crossings and station platforms, fencing works for boundary security, and de-vegetation works for train performance.

Route Clearance – In recent years we have been able to pull more of our civil engineering capabilities into our works on electrification programme’s by getting involved in route clearance works for OHLE. These projects mainly involve the alteration of bridges (usually raising the height) to make the physical space for the Overhead Line Equipment on newly electrified lines.
