Enabling the Future of Freight at Nissan Sunderland
Enabling the Future of Freight at Nissan Sunderland
July 23, 2025
On Tuesday, our CEO Shane O’Halloran and Infrastructure MD Daniel Wiscombe joined industry leaders to mark the launch of the ZEHID Electric Freightway Charge Yard at the Nissan Motor Corporation manufacturing plant in Sunderland.
Delivered in close collaboration with GRIDSERVE this pioneering project forms part of the UK Government-funded Zero Emission HGV and Infrastructure Demonstrator (ZEHID) programme, led by GRIDSERVE in partnership with Innovate UK.
Enable was proud to lead the civils and charging infrastructure installation – powering a new era of zero-emission freight in the UK.
The site features 𝟕 ABB ultra-rapid chargers, capable of powering up to 10 electric HGV’s simultaneously.
It supports a fleet of 25 electric trucks from DAF Trucks UK and Volvo Trucks UK.
It will enable 60 zero-emission deliveries to the Nissan plant daily, saving an estimated 1,500 tonnes of CO₂ per year – the equivalent of 2.4 million km driven.
We’re especially proud of:
- Outstanding feedback from GRIDSERVE, Nissan UK, and Maritime Transport across our work sites
- Our vital role in enabling the UK’s first electric HGVs to hit the motorway
- Supporting the nation’s shift from combustion to clean, electric logistics
Our CEO Shane said: “We’re incredibly proud to play a part in the Electric Freightway – a truly pioneering initiative that will accelerate the electrification of freight transport across the UK’s road network.”
“Our sincere thanks to GRIDSERVE for placing their trust in Enable, and to all our partners for their continued collaboration. This project is a perfect example of our mission to ‘deliver lasting community value’ – in this case by helping to decarbonise road haulage, a critical step in reducing emissions and moving towards a Net Zero future.”
This project places Enable at the forefront of the green transport revolution, showcasing our trusted expertise in civils and power connectivity for complex, future-facing infrastructure.
A huge thank you to our Infrastructure and Energy Connection teams for their outstanding work. We’re proud to be enabling a more sustainable future – one charge at a time.
