Soho Depot – Phase II
West Midlands Train
Enable Infrastructure delivered Phase 2 of the Soho EMU Train Depot enhancement project for our client West Midlands Trains.
Works were successfully awarded through high level performance, committed dedication and a quality product delivered during phase 1, Construction of Harmill gantry system and Maintenance Enhancements within soho depot workshops shed.
The project
Phase 2 Works commenced 03/06/2024 WK10 last year and concluded in April 2025 WK01, Self delivered from Concept through to Completion, with the demolition of all eight existing concrete walkways, and constructing eight new GRP walkways on time, and to specification, fulfilling our commitment as Principal Contractor leaving long lasting value for our client, stakeholders, and end users.
Our vison of a safer more modern enhanced depot, creating an efficient and more reliable experience for the passenger has really come to life.
The project scope presented significant challenges along the journey, including redesigns of track drainage systems to fully enable CET modification to the walkways, we explored valuable timely engineering exercises and overcame multiple localised restrictions within the depot, and the highways surrounding the depot.
Through our determination and expertise, and collaboration from our client and end user, our team delivered through all obstacles, remaining resilient, matching pace to urgency in gaining all outputs of expectation around programme, leaving exceptional results on the successful construction completion.
The challenge
With significant challenges along the journey including redesigns of track drainage systems to fully enable CET modifications to the new scoped walkways, we explored value engineering exercises in a timely manner to overcome the obstructions of multiple buried services located, diverting us away from the original proposed route compliantly with new design.
We experienced localised restrictions within depot and the highway surrounding the depot.
Within the depot we committed with always maintaining four functional CET points throughout our construction activities allowing depot staff use, keeping train units clean without disruption to trains within our stay.
The depot required to be operational as a must for use, stabling of units, west midlands trains training and in the event of unplanned units where required to arrive we upkept with meticulous planning the accessibility of siding RDS1-11.
The Isolations where strategic and phased again with clear precise planning around our Ontrack activities with plant consisting of Excavators, Dumpers, RRVs with boxes and trailers, traversing through site safely.
With a height restricted low bridge on main entrance, and limited compound storage space this was another challenge, making delivery plans in sequence under strict supervision and robust pre- planning to ensure all was on site in the required time. Our momentum of around safe logistics demonstrated.
Through our determination and expertise, our team delivered through all obstacles faced and remained resilient matching pace with urgency, gaining all measured outputs exceeding expectations on achieving a tight programme, leaving exceptional results on the construction completion for west midlands trains.
The solution
With cost effectiveness around our values, our expertise and diligence around safety recognising importance of integration with communication being the key in our collaborative working we safely together overseen a well-executed delivery of phase 2.
Lessons learnt data captured throughout, was reviewed and assessed with team members openly to ensure all engaged and aware of the good the bad the ugly, ensuring we maintained an accident-free delivery, The workforce consisted of 188 through the lifecycle of phase 2, at peak times our site mobilisation was 54 personnel team members onsite at the same time, All home safely which we celebrate success with.
Another standout achievement was saving our client £1.3 million on walkway materials alone through innovative value engineering.
We were welcoming new supply chain partners being able to deliver with value to key milestone dates with our demolished and as dug material being taken away through Christmas working, this freeing up space ready for depot colleagues to return after the festive break un-disrupted on returning.
