Malcolm Blaxall

Malcolm’s career in the construction industry began as a chain boy in 1981 working for Balfour Beatty on Europe’s largest earth fill dam and progressed on to a long term position training as a Quantity Surveyor on numerous road projects throughout England. From Balfour Beatty Malcolm transitioned into a Commercial Management consultancy practice enhancing his experience working on various construction industry projects from domestic house building to industrial, super tension power, road and rail. From these consultancy projects, Malcolm moved to into the power industry, taking on the role of Regional Commercial Manager in the Midlands for Balfour Kilpatrick.

After seven years with BK, Malcolm secured a position as Commercial Director of a cladding and acoustic specialist before branching out on his own for seventeen years established as a Consultant Commercial Manager, In this time Malcolm developed strong relationships across the rail industry including a seven year stretch with Bechtel/Network Rail managing signalling, telecoms, OHLE and security on the West Coast mainline upgrade programme.

As the West Coast programme ended a fantastic opportunity to work on various of Mace’s international projects abroad arose; including a framework contract with the FCO, constructing embassy buildings all over the world (the James Bond posting!), a superyacht marina in Montenegro and a hotel, business and retail development in Belarus. After several successful years spent in these various postings, another exciting opportunity arose opening up a claims consultancy in Hong Kong which took Malcolm and his family into the far east to prepare claims on rail, underground and road projects in the Hong Kong province of China.

Upon becoming a grandfather, Malcolm returned to the UK to be closer to family and to undertake the role of Senior Commercial Manager with Atkins. Responsible for the South East Region of the transport division, until his recent departure to join Enable Infrastructure (formerly known as BCM Construction) as their Senior Commercial Manager (Major Projects) in September 2020. He will be responsible for delivering current live projects as well as developing new opportunities and helping us diversify into new markets.

When asked on his opinions on joining the company he gave three reasons as to why he was pleased to become a Senior Commercial Manager with Enable Infrastructure:

“Joining Enable Infrastructure at this time in such a volatile world is exciting, with new opportunities to develop with the times and assist an enthusiastic team to secure healthy growth for this construction gem. With the wealth of experience behind me, I am excited to develop strong successful processes and relationships, and hope to give the business a robust foundation from which they can continue to springboard from into even greater things. The small family style approach has proven already to be a fantastic environment to share my knowledge and skills with.”

When asked to give an insight into Malcolm’s life outside of work, this is what he had to say:

“Having been brought up in Kenya as a tea planter’s son, I have benefited from the opportunity to be closely involved with nature and international culture all of my life and would consider myself a conservationist and seasoned traveller. I am a keen sportsman, having enjoyed life playing various sports including squash, tennis, badminton and rugby. Rugby has been an important part of my life as a player, coach and referee and finally as the first president of Montenegro Rugby. Since lockdown, I have developed a new hobby – rebuilding our river cruiser from scratch to ensure we have a suitable isolation location which can be accessed from our idyllic home set on the banks of the River Avon in Worcestershire where my wife Lisa, daughter, son and grandson have lived for the last 16 years.”

Commercial Director Stuart Jackson had this to say on him joining Enable Infrastructure:

“We are delighted that Malcolm has joined Enable Infrastructure as Senior Commercial Manager. His wealth of experience will further enable us to grow in line with our business strategy by bringing additional rigour to our commercial processes and to the management of our supply chain and customers. Welcome to Enable Infrastructure Malcolm.”
