Enable Infrastructure nominated for “Rail team of the Year” at the 2022 Rail Business Awards

Enable Infrastructure (formerly known as BCM Construction) has been nominated at this year’s Rail Business Awards (Wednesday 24th February) for ‘Rail team of the year’ following the successful completion of the London Liverpool St platform extension project.

Facing prestigious competition from the Network Rail Black Bridge Project Team, Dartmoor Line Project Group, and East Coast Digital Programme (ECDP) all of which highlights Enable Infrastructure’s ability to shine as an SME, judges will be looking closely at how effectively all the nominees were able to coordinate and marshal their resources and people along with a criterion such as maintaining good working relations, workforce development and the willingness to go above and beyond while sustaining high standards.

From tender to completion, Enable Infrastructure engaged, and facilitated collaboration between numerous clients, stakeholders, and delivery partners – including Tier 1 suppliers – to design and build two platform extensions and decommission another at London Liverpool Street, one of the UK’s busiest train stations.

This scheme formed a critical element of the £14.8bn Crossrail upgrade and modernisation of London Liverpool Street Station to accommodate the MTR Elizabeth Line’s new and longer 205m Full Length Units (FLU) trains in response to the expected 40 – 60% increased passenger demand over the next 25 years.

Two 10-day blockades at Christmas 2020 and Easter 2021 were allocated to commission and complete the works ahead of a May 2021 completion date. As a legacy project, larger and more experienced companies had previously attempted, without success, to redesign the platform layout to accommodate longer trains and develop a delivery programme within the set timeframes.

Through novel thinking, cooperation with clients and partners, utilising supply chain capability and cross-pollinating strengths, Enable Infrastructure enabled London Liverpool Street Station to increase capacity and improve passenger experience safely, efficiently and on time. An achievement many thought impossible.

Enable Infrastructure appreciated the challenge of delivering a project on a complicated and busy route within constrained timeframes and understood that, to succeed, they needed to coalesce with industry partners to explore innovations and build a viable multi-discipline programme.

The strength of the nomination is grounded in four important pillars: collaborative planning, innovation, safety, and workforce development. Each pillar saw Enable Infrastructure originate, and execute an assortment of engineering, logistical, and technical tools, some for the very first time, which ultimately allowed the project to flourish and fulfil its objectives.

From rigorous programme planning with partners to the unprecedented, combined deployment of track slab and modular platform structures, to the usage of COMET investigation tool, the highly effective COVID protocols, and the opportunity to upskill young staff during the formative phase in their careers, Enable Infrastructure is delighted to have been recognised for these efforts and more with this nomination demonstrating our ongoing commitment to our five values:
